Common Questions We Hear

How often should I get an oral cancer screening?

We recommend receiving an oral cancer screening at least once a year, typically during your regular dental exams. If you have risk factors such as tobacco or alcohol use, more frequent screenings may be advised.

Who is at higher risk for oral cancer?

People who use tobacco, drink alcohol regularly, are over the age of 45, or have prolonged sun exposure (linked to lip cancer) are at a higher risk. A history of HPV infection can also increase risk. Even if you don’t fall into these categories, regular screenings are still important.

Can younger patients get oral cancer?

Yes, while oral cancer is more common in older adults, younger individuals can still develop it—especially if they have certain risk factors like HPV. Routine screenings help ensure early detection, no matter your age.
